The world according to MeMy mother never wore pearls and high heels around the house. She never looked totally put together and I never once, not once, said "Gosh" or "golly gee". My dad didn't earn a high salary and he didn't always know best. My uncles and aunts didn't pop in, unexpected, and give sweet, simple advice, and my brothers and sisters didn't give me rides on their bike handles. So, you might think I had a terrible childhood, but I did not. I had a normal childhood. Unlike the sitcom situations I mentioned above. I believe that the entire idea of a perfect family is silly, and, unfortunately, the image has caused many to feel that they are failing in their own lives. We watch TV and believe that we should be like those who are on the small screen. This includes models, actors and politicians. We should have the never ending patience of those TV mothers and fathers who never raise their voice, never spank, and never lose control. So, what is wrong with us? Well, honey, it's the same reason we do not look like the size 2 model who's advertising the potato chips. Because we are not perfect, and neither is she. She is air brushed, made up, and caught in the best possible light, always. In sitcoms the parents have nothing to lose, their responsibility is over in 30 minutes. Ours is not. So, the next time you feel that you do not, quite, "measure up", change your measuring cup, because the one your using is broke.
