Letting go of fear

Most women today are strong, independent, brave and resilient. However, there is still fear amongst us.

I am afraid of snakes, rats, losing my children, dying young, and going on a diet.

Yes, I'm afraid of going on a diet. Now, before you pick up the phone and call for backup, please allow me to explain.

The word 'diet' is a very powerful omen to me. It represents my future, my level of willpower, my faith, and my ability as a woman to do those things that I am responsible for completing.

Some of the happiest, proudest moments of my life have been achieved as the direct result of a diet.

However, some of my saddest, lowest and most self deprecating moments have also been at the hands of my latest diet.

If I succeed I am the kind of person I want to be when I grow up, however, if I 'fail' I am ashamed to leave my home.

When and where did eating gain so much power in my life? Does food, eating, diet and planning have control over your life, as well?

The best way to alleviate or fears is to face them, to gain acceptance of that which we are afraid of facing the most.

However, for many, the very word diet rings terror into the soul, the stomach growls, the heart races and the brain tries frantically to remember if we are 'good' today, or if we have been 'bad'.

The key to losing weight and gaining acceptance over your life is to realize that the word diet is no more than a word. A vocabulary word that merely describes something or someone. It is not a gauge of your abilities, efforts or possibilities. Success is not found in a diet, or outside of a diet. It is found in your own mind when you accept who you are, strive for continual improvement and never stop trying. Be healthy, be free and be proud. Let your fear end today, and, if necessary, never say that word again.
