Moving on with your life

Many of us have excess baggage that we carry around, heavy burdens picked up in our youth and never really put down.

There are a lot of people who will tell you to get rid of your baggage. To concentrate on either pretending it isn't there, or dropping it for good. That is really good advice except for one small problem. It's impossible.

Can you remember the first time your mother hurt your feelings? Or, how about the first time you liked someone, and they didn't like you back.

Can you remember holidays that went wrong, or family that was way dysfuntional?

Congratulations. You're very normal.

Now, don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying your parents are terrible, or that you should call up your brother and tell him off. What I'm saying is that if you have issues, you are not alone. No one grew up in a 'perfectly normal household'. Unless you were raised on the set of a television sitcom, you had disappointments, fights, arguments, problems, crazy moments, and hard feelings. (You probably have an uncle that acts like a jerk and an aunt who loves to shop, or maybe you have a neat freak in your famiy, or a slob.)

Or, maybe you were abused, emotionally, physically or sexually. These are serious issues, that require therapy and information. Let me be the first to offer an opinion, however unwarranted or uninvited. What ever happened to you when you were a child is NOT YOUR FAULT. I don't care what it was. It was not your fault. (Disclaimer, if you are the bad seed or damien, it might have been your fault)

My advice is not to lose your baggage, but to hold it close to you, and take it with you. That's right. My reasoning is this: You have places to go. You can either stay at home and wish for no baggage, or you can pick it up and move on with your life. If you have major issues you may want to seek counseling or therapy. However, don't stop your life.

Me, personallay, I just lead my life fearlessly, dragging my baggage behind me all the way. Know what's neat? I've managed to lose some, and others have just worn down to all most nothing. Not bad. Not bad at all.
