Do you eat because there's nothing on TV?People eat for many different reasons. Some good, some not so good. (For the purpose of this article, 'bad' does not exist. Good reasons include hunger, thirst, nutrition, energy, and survival. Bad reasons include boredom, anger, sadness, depression, and habit. What is true hunger? True hunger is when your body alerts you that it requires nourishment. As Pooh would say, "I feel rumbly in my tumbly". Thirst is your body's way of telling you it needs water. We drink many things when we are thirsty, but all our body really wants, needs and craves is water. (However, this never stopped me from buying a Dr. Pepper at the vending machine). Drink when you are thirsty, eat when you are hungry. Try to drink water first, because that way if your thirst is quenched, you will never touch the high sugar sodas. Nutrition is a term referring to what our body needs, in so far as vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Just a general note here, our eyes may be saying snickers bar, but our body wants a whole wheat roll. Listen to your body, and occasionally, let your eyes have their own way. That way you don't feel deprived, and your eyes don't go on strike. Energy is necessary for our bodies to perform any function. This can be putting our shoes on, or swimming 4 laps. It can be driving to work, or making love. Our body requires energy, which is found in calories and fat. (Yes, fat) However, if you eat more fat than your body can burn, it will be like your car. Go to the station and force more gas into the tank than it was designed to hold and what happens. The gas spills over onto the ground. Your stomach will do the same. Survival. Most of us never really understand this, because we are neither from Ethopia, or on a television show eating worms. Those who are will be interviewed and can relay the true meaning of this term for you. So, what do you do when you are bored, mad, depressed, or motivated by habit? You identify and rectify. First you make yourself understand what you really want. If you want to scream at your husband, eating a banana split will not get rid of your anger. It will, however, get rid of your new swim suit. If you are bored no amount of potato chips will change your life. Get off the couch, get out of the dead end job, get out of your house, and do something fun and entertaining. If this is snowboarding, for you, do it. If fun for you is a walk in the park, then do that. Not everyone is the same. Rollerblading was just not meant for some of us.
