For the love of food

We often hear it from friends, family and co-workers. "I love chocolate", "I would really love some cheesecake right now", "I think I'm in love with your cooking", or even "Oh, man, don't you just love this cheeseburger?"

Have you really ever thought about the relationship between food and love? Is it a relationship you have, or someone you know?

I believe that, to a certain extent, we all have these feelings and emotions concerning food. It goes back in our history and our psyche.

Consider this: 1. What do we give someone who is in bed with a cold? 2. What does almost everyone get on their birthday? 3. What is your usual gift to your kids / spouse / sibling / mother / father on mother's & father's day? 4. What is the highest selling item around valentine's day? 5. If you fall, and get a boo-boo, what does the doctor give you after your exam, to make you 'feel better'? 6. Why do millions of kids wear silly customs on Halloween and go around to neighbors houses? 7. What is no movie complete without?

Ok. Now, if I am not mistaken, the general collective answers to those questions would be: 1. Chicken noodle soup 2. Cake and Ice cream 3. A nice dinner or lunch at a good restaurant 4. Candy, especially chocolate 5. A lollipop, or a popsicle, or candy, or maybe bubble gum 6. For the candy and the occasional candy apple. 7. Why, popcorn, of course.

So, as a society, we generally have been raised to believe and accept the fact that food is the answer to most of our problems. Are you bored? Tired? Sad? Lonely? Depressed? Feeling Good? Sharing a special moment? In love? Just dumped? Feeling special? Feeling worthless? The answer to all of these, and more, is food.

But, is it really the answer?

Although it will seem politically incorrect to say this, I don't believe it's bad to find comfort in food. I do, however, believe that it can be very bad if you look for love in a food container. This can be a life long love affair that is destined to end in heart break, or a heart attack.

So, for everyone out there who "loves to eat" I say, eat and enjoy your life...but the old saying is "Eat to live, don't live to eat".

Don't let a hunger for life be mistaken for a hunger for food. If you want chocolate, go for it. But if it's something else you want, and it doesn't hurt you or anyone else, go for that! Good luck.
