The Scales of JusticeThrough history women have always had numerous roles and responsibilities in society. That sentiment has never been more truer than it is today, in the year 2000. Women remain the primary care givers for children, and parents. Women continue to be the primary homemaker. Yet, women are also responsible for obtaining, maintaining and being successful at outside employment. The pressure of our modern society is to have the best, to be the best, to look the best and to perform the best. Therefore, as women, we feel that we are lacking something if we do not look like Cindy Crawford, cook like Julia Child, decorate like Martha Stewart, dress like Coco Chanel, sew like our grandmother, have the patience of our mother, have careers like our role models, presence like Oprah, and the intelligence of Maya Angelou. There is much expected of the modern woman, but, I dare to say, we expect the most from ourselves. We allow magazines, television, and radio to tell us how we should look, act, feel, think, talk, walk, exercise, and eat. We allow a small metal object, inanimate and silent, to judge our own self worth. When the numbers get higher, our spirits sink lower, when the numbers decrease, we feel on top of the world. Should our life be judged by this 'scale of justice'? Shouldn't we look inside ourselves, or to our higher power? The true beauty of women is their strength. Women have much to be proud of; kindness, intelligence, beauty, grace, and, yes, strength. We are the one's who give birth, reason with a two year old, balance the checkbooks, bring home a paycheck, care for our mothers and nurture our husbands. Be true to yourself, and proud of who you are. You are woman. Let your voice be heard, your soul create, and your spirit soar.
