Middle Aged with Eating Disorders

May 5, 2003 - © Heather Mudgett.

share what it is like living with a mother who has an eating disorder and how it has affected her as a young woman. Linda is a registered nurse who became anorexic at 44 years old. She says her condition wasn't based on her physical appearance, but rather, it was the pressures in her life that contributed to her anorexia. She says her mid-40's were very traumatic, and she felt as if her life was spiraling out of control. Linda's husband, Glen, and her children, Jill & Andrew, join us in the studio to discuss how Linda's disorder affected the family. Then, Amy is a young mother of seven children. While she denies being anorexic or bulimic, she admits being obsessed with her weight and with exercising, and encourages her children to be the same way. She discusses how she feels about this issue in the studio. Finally, we meet Dr. Ellen Haimoff, a psychologist who specializes in eating disorders. She helps our guests understand more about their disease, and lends her advice and expertise to the discussion."

Should you ever run across a re-broadcast of this show, I do recommend watching it.

While there are a number of eating disorder bulletin boards and chat rooms available on the web, many of us 'older' folks find they are often populated by teens who, while indeed struggling with eating disorders themselves, have little more in common with us and our 'middle-age' issues. I did find at least one board specfically for 'Older Women and Eating Disorders'. It can be found at the Eating-Disorder.org site.
