Ideas for Papers and Projects Relating to Eating Disorders

Sep 18, 2002 - © Heather Mudgett.

I frequently receive emails from people working on a schools paper or report. Generally, I'm asked for ideas to write the paper on, links to sites relating to their topic, or simply for my opinion on a specific aspect of eating disorders.

So, to help some of you out in this regard, this months article is to offer up topic ideas for papers or projects, and provide helpful links to use when researching papers and projects.

Lets start with topic ideas:

EATING DISORDERS in general. Review the different types of eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia and compulsive eating. Point out some of the lesser known eating disorders such as the female athlete triad, night eating and/or nocturnal sleep eating and pica.

PHYSICAL DANGERS OF EATING DISORDERS Discuss the serious physical consequences of eating disorders.

EATING DISORDERS IN MEN AND BOYS There are a number of articles which can be found on the web, discussing the increasing percentage of men and boys with serious eating disorders.

ATHLETES WITH EATING DISORDERS Find articles and stories about athletes who have struggled with eating disorders, including some who have died as a result of their eating disorders. Again, there are many stories out there to be found. Check through a few of my articles on the subject for ideas and related links: FEMALE ATHLETE TRIAD, EATING DISORDERS IN SPORTS and WHEN THIN MEANS WIN. Keep in mind that some of these articles are now a few years old, so not all of the links may still be valid. However, I they may be a good starting point for this topic.

EATING DISORDERS, BODY IMAGE AND THE MEDIA Does what we see on the TV, movie-screens and in magazines, truly influence how we feel about our own bodies? Do unhealthy actresses and heroin-chic models, have anything to do with our own self esteem? (This is perhaps the most frequent topic I am asked to comment on.) While I have written a few articles opn the subject (ok, one was more a rant, than an article...) I suggest doing your own in depth research on the subject.

As you start looking for information on these or other eating disorder topics, a few excellent places to start are:
