Breaking the Cycle© Heather Mudgett.
Whatever the eating disorder may be.... anorexia, bulmia, compulsive overeating.... one big step towards beating it may be simply breaking the cycle.
The anorexic may be slave to her (or his) strict regime of restrictive eating. The bulimic may find herself (or himself) stuck in a dizzying, viscous spiral of binging & purging. The compulsive overeater, may be unable to break the bitter habit of stuffing her (or his) emotions and feelings with food. So, how do you break the cycle? Strangely enough, one way may be to try switching to another regime of some sort. I've occasionally found myself slipping into a nasty bulimic relapse (believe me, if I do relapse.... I relapse BIG TIME). So let me try to explain what I mean about "switching to another regime of some sort". In my case, I started following a protien diet. Now, I realize this is simply replacing one minor obsession (binging & purging) with another (focusing on the protien Diet), but it worked. After day 1 on the diet, I had no desire to binge & purge. Maybe, in my case, because the majority of what I was binging on were sweets (like ice cream or cookies) or high carbohydrate items (such as pasta and breads). I stayed on the diet for 4 weeks, and didn't binge or purge the entire time. As an added benefit, I lost the remainder of my post-baby weight. Now I'm weaning myself off the protien diet, and have yet to have even an inkling of an urge to relapse. Now, believe me, I know this is just something that worked for me and that everyone and every situation is different. All I'm trying to point out is that by focusing my attention on planning my meals around protien items rather than planning on which fast food place I'm going to drive through next, helped break me out of the binge/purge cycle.
