Eating Disorders Awareness Week - 2001© Heather Mudgett.
Twenty five years ago, anorexia and bulimia were rarely discussed and considered very uncommon. Today, eating disorders are recognized as a serious problem. Not only in the United States, but also worldwide.
Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) is Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention's national outreach campaign. During this week each February EDAP provides the opportunity for eating disorders organizations, mental health professionals, families, and concerned individuals around the world to join together to distribute information and organize awareness and prevention events. This year, EDAW is schduled in the United States from February 25th to March 4th. The Eating Disorders and Prevention Organization explains that "local activities will be coordinated across America by a network of volunteers. These EDAP representatives work with local K-12 schools, colleges and universities, therapists, doctors, nutritionists, educators, and individuals to promote Eating Disorders Awareness Week activities and events designed to enhance public awareness of eating disorders and to challenge cultural attitudes and values contributing to eating disorders. Through this network, EDAP distributes speaker's presentation packets, school programs, handouts, articles, resources, brochures, and other prevention and awareness information, along with posters, buttons, and T-shirts with the theme, Don't Weigh Your Self-Esteem...It's What's Inside That Counts." For additional information, please visit http://www.edap.org/ . The U.S. is not the only country which takes a week in February to recognize the serious problem of eating disorders. In the United Kingdom, Eating Disorders Association (United Kingdom) hosts it's own series of events (February 11th to 17th, 2001).
