Suggested Websites for Information on the Media's Influence on Eating Disorders and Body Image© Heather Mudgett.
The media's influence on eating disorders is a common topic for term papers, research papers and other miscellaneous projects.
Websites about Eating Disorders and the Media A great place to begin finding information on the subject, is at Something-Fishy.org. Their 'media' page includes a detailed exploration into the role the media and society play in the developement of an Eating Disorder. The PBS website has an article titled Perfect Illusions. The first paragraph says it all: "One of the ways we can protect our self-esteem and body image from the media's often narrow definitions of beauty and acceptability is to become a critical viewer of the media messages we are bombarded with each day. Media messages about body shape and size will affect the way we feel about our bodies and ourselves only if we let them. When we effectively recognize and analyze the media messages that influence us, we remember that the media's definitions of beauty and success do not have to define our self-image or potential." According to a midwestern University research study, pictures of waif thin models and skeletal actresses may play a role in eating disorders. This study is discussed in a 1997 article from The University Record. At PageWise.com is another article regarding the Media's Influence on Eating Disorders. It's fairly short but current and worth a quick read. A 1999 project by 4 Hofstra University Students, called Eating Disorders and the Media, includes information, links, and general information. The information is helpful, and the Images is most interesting. They have a variety of links to advertisement photos which utilize unrealistically thin models to sell their products. The BBC ran a story in 2002 called Television Link to Eating Disorders. They report that in a Harvard University study, "Doctors say they have found further evidence to suggest television programmes encourage eating disorders among teenage girls." The study discussed is very interesting and included both U.S. and international patients. Hopefully, the links above will give you a starting point for your own article, project or paper.
