Smoothies

Smoothies... the word brings up vivid images of tall glasses of ice-cold drinks that slide down your gullet, chilling every pore in your body, and give you the sense that all's right with the world!

And that's what you'll find at Smoothies! Just what are these? Smoothies are ice-cold cocktails made from fresh fruit pulps and juices with a basic milk, yoghurt or coconut milk base.

This site that I found has about 20 recipes for some great-tasting Smoothies that you can make at home instead of going out and having to shell out a large sum for them. I've listed five of my favorites (and the ingredients aren't country specific to availability) so enjoy. Make it a point to visit the site and check out some of the other recipes as well.

You'll have to stock up on fresh fruits to really have a ball. I went bananas (no pun intended) shopping at the local fruit market this weekend and I had even greater fun trying out some of the combos, since they're so damn simple to prepare. You'll have to dust off that old juicer in the attic, or buy yourself one.

The basic method for making your Smoothie is the same. Only the ingredients vary.

Method

Put all ingredients into blender. Blend well until smoothie consistency is reached! Voila...

Strawberry Banana

1 banana
4 strawberries
1/2 cup skim milk
1/2 cup apple juice

Apple Coconut

1/4 cup apple juice
1 pinch grated coconut or 1 T. coconut milk
1/2 banana
1/4 teaspoon fresh ginger root peeled
2 small ice cubes

Arctic Forest

1 peach, frozen
10 blueberries, frozen
1 cup light (reduced sugar) fat-free vanilla yogurt, frozen
1/2 cup 1% milk
1/2 T. crushed pecan
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Pineapple Berry Crush

1 cup orange juice
1/4 cup pineapple juice
2 pineapple rings (Dole pineapple slices)
6 fresh strawberries
12-15 frozen raspberries
8-10 frozen boysenberries
12-15 frozen blueberries
3 oz. non-fat yogurt, any flavor (about half a container of Yoplait)
Ice (however much you prefer for consistency)

Pina Colada

1 6oz container nonfat coconut yogurt (frozen)
1/2 banana (frozen)
1/2 of a 20 oz can crushed pineapple
1 c. nonfat milk

These are all good. Try some of your own combinations as well. Have fun and cheers!
