Wine Tasting

  • Wineries~ It seems that all the regions of the States (in addition to all the wondrous corners of the world) can boast of wineries. Keep your eyes peeled for tours and tasting events. A simple internet search on the words “winery” and your state name should yield some starting points. I’ve included a small list of interesting wineries I’ve come across (it’s a little heavy on the Midwestern wineries, but that’s where I live!):
  • Home~ It really takes little planning to host a decent wine tasting, as I witnessed at a party hosted by my co-worker, Brian, whose parents also own a small winery in Michigan. Brian sent out an email (this was the dawn before Evite) to let us in on time, place, date, and the basic instruction to bring a wine. There were about six guests, each bringing their interpretation of a wine worth trying. My friend Joe brought a box of Franzia (which was actually pretty tasty). All Brian had to do was set out the wine glasses and a tray of cheeses and grapes. How easy is that? Decide if you want to have your friends bring a mix of offerings or if you want to supply the wine. Serve simple cheeses and fruits (many wine or cheese stewards in gourmet delis can help you out here), or check out a few recipe sites for ideas on simple foods you can serve with your wines.

Pick your participants. Toss an Evite or teaser email out about 2-3 weeks before you plan your shindig. You can ask for suggestions or ideas for who’s game for what. You can aim to have your final invitation, with the complete wine event details, with your guests the week before the do. You can send a reminder email if necessary the day before.

Suit up your service. When I first graduated from college and moved out to Chicago, my folks gave me some nice basics, which included a few sets of their surplus wine glasses which had never been unboxed from their pantry. I’ve only really begun using them this past year. You really do not need all the technically shaped and sized wine glasses for your first (or fiftieth) wine tasting party. This does not need to be a pretentious affair! Local discount department stores like Target or Kmart
