It's the Great Pumpkin! Party

With Halloween looming just around the corner, I found myself all whacked nostalgic and yearning for a tradition I hadn’t yet spied on TV this year: the Peanuts gang in It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! There is something supremely sweet, pure, and simply lovely about the late, great Charles Schulz’s assembly of beagle, baldy, and the league of the vaguely misfit, all jumbled into a ball of innocent Halloween faith and fun. No slasher bits, blood, or gore. No menacing spirits or kids who see dead people. Just a simple belief in the goodness of party-throwers, trick-or-treating, and one generous being known as the Great Pumpkin. Celebrate a grand tradition that’s been with us since 1966 and host a Great Pumpkin Party.

Round up revelers. Send a great Peanuts electronic postcard or fun, pumpkin-themed paper invitations to wrangle in the other nostalgia-mongers. Be sure to let them know it’s a Great Pumpkin Party. Have guests dress as their favorite Peanuts character. Invite them to bring pumpkin-inspired nosh or glug. Request that all guests bring a pumpkin to carve.

Cue up the Great Pumpkin. I was really disappointed when I checked CBS’s website to see a glaring absence of Peanuts for Halloween, so I went out and bought my own copy of the flick, only to learn later that ABC is airing the special this year. No matter; the ability to air the movie at will makes it easier to plan for the party. It is certainly integral to the theme of your party, no? At the very least, kick off the festivities with the movie, and leave it on loop-play throughout the party if you’d like.

Create some atmosphere. As always, simple is good. Many elements for atmos can be found in the local party décor shop. Basic orange and green paper crepe streamers are cheap and extremely easy to use. Tack some up around your front door or foyer for that pumpkiny festive flavor. Group a few small and medium pumpkins on tables, on stoops, in corners of the room. You can leave them unadulterated or carve them pre-party if you are so inclined. Hang up a few pics or cutouts of the Peanuts gang. Even buy a Great Pumpkin figurine from your local Hallmark, if you’re really into it. Scatter a few inexpensive orange and green votive candles around the tables; tuck them into cutie containers like mini terracotta flowerpots or hollowed-out mini pumpkins. Play a bit of Vince Guaraldi for that authentic Charlie Brown feeling.
