Fall Feast In

It’s been a drizzly, grey fall day today, with the coolish kind of weather that makes you really appreciate being inside. Doubtless, there are many days ahead this season that will send you scurrying for the comfort and coziness of the indoor world after a moment or two too long in the snappy chill of the crunchy orangey-brown season. As I alluded to in Fall Day Out last time, there is so much easy comfort that comes from the season; it’d be mighty shameful to let such an opportunity for easy entertaining slip by. Create a cuddly enclave chez vous and welcome your dearest friends in for a fall feast.

Troop roundup. My whole philosophy is, the easier the better. You can make your fall harvest meal as casual or as swish as you like, but life is so much easier when you keep things simple. You might send out a basic email or make a few phone calls to let your pallies in on a save-the-date kind of thing and then back it up with an Evite or the slightly swisher paper invites singing with the colors of the season. I’ve actually recently read online that you could try using actual fallen leaves as your snail-mail invites and writing the party details on them…however the spirit moves you, go with it and get your friends as into it with the invitation of your choosing. Send your snazzy invites (electronic or otherwise) to reach your guests at least a week and a half before the shindig. Kindly ask for RSVP’s so you can stock up on enough provisions.

Scene setting. I bring the fall flavor into my house because it makes me feel extra-cozy at home, company or not. Helps get me into the season. There are some very simple ways to spiff up your space so it beckons all who behold it to embrace autumn. I have a staircase that opens into the foyer—it’s basically the first thing guests and I see upon coming in. I have clustered mini gourds, pumpkins, and assorted baskets and artificial fall flowers on the bottom three steps to usher in a warm, fall-loving feel. My favorite item is a twig basket I bought for a quarter from a neighborhood garage sale. I filled it with wood fruit I bought for a mere dollar at the semiannual church rummage sale down the block.
