Fall Day Out

Although I often harp on about how much I love spring, autumn is such a close second that I often waver and say it's my favorite season. Ahh, but with good reason: there's so much to relish about the cozy goodness of a toasty space after a good day of tromping about under a chilled sky with the crunch of leaves underfoot. Scores of back-to-school memories are tied to this season, and so many smells, sights, and sounds easily conjure up those rosy reminiscences every year. We had our first real fall-like day this past weekend, and the goodness of the season came right back with the wafts of woodsy smoke off a pile of burning leaves down the block. I still get taken right back to trick-or-treating in second grade whenever I hear Spandau Ballet's "True." And the cozy smell of a warm kitchen after a day of being out in the cool harkens back to Mom's Sunday dinners after a day of leaf-raking and leaf-jumping with my dad and little sis.

Most of us hold a little spot in our hearts for fall. Welcome the season with your treasured people and a fall day out.

Because the beauty of fall is such a simple one, it doesn't take too much planning to get a little activity going. Incite a little interest with an email or quick phone call to your pals. Layer on a sweater or two, stick your tootsies into a comfy pair of boots made for walking, and get thee outside!

Around Town.

  • Go for a walk. Even in the city, autumn seems to shake a little extra vigor and energy into everyone. In Chicago, Lincoln Park is a gorgeous bustle of people and pets amidst the trees. Take a good stroll. Check out your neighborhoods and observe the ways homes and businesses usher out the last of summer and roll in the toasty, warming elements for fall. Pick up cool fallen leaves for pressing and framing.
  • Visit the zoo. Animals kind of do their own thing to prep for the change in season. Zoos are educational fascination and outdoor fun rolled into one.
  • Check out the local botanic garden. The scientific gardeners love a good show of leaves. They are sure to present beautiful and informational exhibits, as well as festivals and events, to welcome the season.
  • Hit a fall festival. Comb your local city websites and newspapers for the scads of fall festivals sure to be in store.
