Beach DayWhen I was in high school, beach season began as early in May as possible, often with prom being the driving force for earning the premature tan. At most schools in my hometown, there was a tradition known as Senior Skip Day, which would conventionally serve as either a day to prepare before the prom (and that ever-important tan) or the day following prom weekend reserved for recuperation. At James Whitcomb Riley, we usually took the preceding Friday before prom to play hooky (though I fancied myself a punkster back then and refused to actually get a tan). With the kiddies packing up for college or loading up on back-to-school action, take advantage of the less crowded beaches and enjoy the flipside of the summer season on a beach day with your buddies. Pick a day. I am by no means advocating skipping work, though if you've got the luxury of a spare vacation or personal day, use it! Keep your eyes on the weather forecast and aim for a sunny and warm (but not sweltering) day. This week's weather in Chicago has been outstanding, with temperatures topping out around 80 degrees. I find that when the weather hits 90 and humidity is high, the beach becomes more of a chore and less of a treat. Invite fellow hooky-players. Don't skip on a school day if you can't afford it (seriously, you could benefit from a weekend jaunt to the beach just as well as during the week), but sometimes you truly relish a day of play you take on the sneak. Call up a couple friends who might be game for a day of co-delinquency at the beginning of the week in which you intend to head to the beach. Confer with the weather map and one another's schedules (some days are just not worth skipping) and agree on a tentative day to go. The day before your planned outing (or even early morning the day of), check weather reports again and call your friends again to confirm who all is going. Play it by ear. If the weather looks like it might start to blow, defer your beach day to a more suitable one. Pack your gear. Beach Supplies ~
