It was back when I was still dabbling in the new economy this past year that I was introduced to this fantastic Italian restaurant in the River North area of the city called Scoozi. Our office was in an old loft building just across the corner parking lot from the always-bustling eatery, so we often frequented this place for lunch. What we hadn’t realized was that we could actually learn to cook some of our favorite dishes for ourselves until Anita, a fellow BlueMeteorite, invited us to take a cooking class with her there. It turned out to be a very nice, grown-up, and civilized girls’ night out. Turns out, taking a cooking class with friends is one of the easiest ways to socialize (catch up with your friends, meet new people), sharpen your culinary prowess, and fill your belly with some really tasty, posh nosh.
Scope out cooking classes to take. Bear in mind that not all cooking classes are created equally; some will be hands-on courses, while others will be more of a spectator sport with a tasty payoff. Take your own and your friends’ preferences in account in seeking out a class to try. None of us knew what to expect with the Scoozi class. I was surprised (but not entirely all that disappointed) to find that we’d be watching and sipping wine rather than actually preparing the meal of Walnut Apple salad, Cream Pumpkin soup, and Lamb. We had a different wine with each course of the meal, and an expert wine steward explained to us the merits and stories of each wine. Consider if this will do for your friends and yourself, or if you want the pizzazz of actual preparation.
You can dig almost anywhere for cooking classes. Try your city’s homepage or city guide websites like CitySearch or DigitalCity. The local paper’s Food, Lifestyle, or even Classified sections might offer up some info, and the trusty old yellow pages should have an extensive set of listings for possibilities.
Restaurants ~ I was truly surprised to find that many restaurants here offer cooking classes. I simply entered a search on Google for ‘Chicago cooking class’ and found that several of our esteemed restaurants and shops do offer up cooking classes. Among my search results this particular day:
