Tropical Tango

  • Mood. On top of the decorations (which should already endow your festivities with a humongo burst of spunky vivacity and verve), toss a few island tunes on the music machine. Don Ho is an inveterate favorite for many a partygoer, but Jimmy Buffet creations are just as well. Light a few tropically scented candles for ambient smells. Hang a few leis and hula skirts to be donned by guests later.
  • Food. And Drinkie winkies. Light food and fruity drinks won't steer you wrong in warm weather. Since I am no expert on Hawaiian or luau cuisine, I'd hit a few recipe sites for basic drink and food ideas and perhaps let some of your guests know what they can contribute. You might also think about ordering seafood carryout (or overnight delivery) from a renowned eatery like Bob Chinn's and buying ready-mix booze.
  • Activities. Music and food are wondrous activities within themselves, but adding a few extras here and there can't hurt. Try hula-hoop competitions, carnival-like games like tossing a ball into a faraway fishbowl, etc. I found several interesting Luau-specific sites on the internet. Here are a few I found especially useful for luau lowdown:

Bring it all together. Although summer is usually nice weather-wise, you might want to draw up some alternate plans in the case of the very sudden tropical storm. If fair weather is on your side, definitely keep festivities outdoors. However, if the sunshine decides to elude you, do as we college students in the middle of the colder American Heartland did, and gussy up your interior to look like an island exterior. Buy a kiddie pool and fill it with water and a touch of blue food coloring (or fill it with ice and your bottles and cans of beer and soda). Buy a big swatch of astro-turf and scatter plastic flowers across it. Halve coconuts and use the shells for candleholders, nut bowls, bikini tops. Hang those humongous beach-meets-dolphin-in-paradise posters on your wall. Go over the top and make all the cheap and easy elements work for you and make for a wondrous time under the sun (even if it is the halogen lamp in your basement). Mahalo!
