It’s when the cozy glow of holiday-winter fades into a dingy slush that the malls, boutiques, and online retailers start throwing their best sales. In the past week I’ve racked up on sales that knock up to 70% off original pricetags; this is a
fantastic time for stocking up on fun pieces to add to your wardrobe. I am an absolute sucker for a good sale and load up on
sweaters and
trendy bits and pieces that were a bit too rich for my blood the first time around. For many of us, the true thrill is the great bargain we get. But how to fit all your new treasures into your closet when you’ve still got a load of clothing from past seasons? It’s a real chore to try stuffing more
clothes into a crowded closet. Make room in your wardrobe by hosting a
clothes-swapping party and offer up your castoffs for the taking.
Throw an
invitation to your friends about a week or two before the event and ask them to dive into their closets and weed out all the clothes they don’t want to wear anymore. Most gals I know would love an excuse to make more space in their closets. Invite as many friends as you can comfortably fit into your pad, bearing in mind they are coming with stashes of clothes. Don’t worry that your friends aren’t all the same size; part of the fun of the party is getting to see what everyone else is bringing, and although you might not fit all your friends’ pieces, there may be a few who do share the same size. Various sizes of clothing are bound to turn up as people shed those sizes they don’t wear or plan to wear anymore (think, fat pants, skinny pants, etc.). In addition to coincidental size, some items are one-size-fits-all, like scarves and wraps.
- Pick a convenient time for everyone to schlep their goods over, like a weekend afternoon.
- Prep your place with makeshift changing rooms. Bathrooms and walk-in closets are natural choices for fitting rooms, but your friends will likely outnumber these nifty little spaces. Try stringing up a temporary clothesline from plastic, stick-up hooks on opposing walls and then draping a sheet over the clothesline.
- Set up some space for each person to lay out some of their goods. Maybe have the showing space be in your living room and clear the coffee table or floor so participants can spread out some of their wares.
