Winter Slumber Party

Remember the toasty comfort of snuggling down in your sleeping bag, nestling in among your friends in slumber party mode? It’s a little joy that we as adults sometimes forego after leaving college, but why should it be forgotten? Gathering together with pals is never a bad idea, and combining it with the occasional indulgence in being collective homebodies can make for a good time. What better way to while away the post-holiday winter blahs than to invite over your favorite people and throw a slumber party?

Although it’s probably manageable to have a sleepover on a “school night,” it might work better to select a weekend evening. Unless you all carpool to the same office the next day, it just makes for less worry and more fun and relaxation. Send out an invite the week or so before your little shindig. Round up your favorite guys and gals (that’s the best part of having a sleepover as an adult—you can invite all your favorite buddies, regardless of gender) and ask for some feedback on what things they’d like to do. Remind them to bring their cozy sleeping bags, pillows, and pj’s.

In case your friends are the relaxed and nonchalant type, you might want to go ahead and build a small cache of things to do with your overnight guests. Stock up on the things you like to do when spending a night in. Keep your attendees in mind as you pick and choose the specifics.

Rent some movies. Pick up the newest in the films your friends like…art-house, drama, high comedy (and low), chick-flicks. If tradition binds you all, pick up a few classics like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Casablanca, The Jerk, Sleepless In Seattle. If your sleepover is all femmes, rent the chick flick you’ve all secretly been wanting to see (don’t worry, secret little indulgences like these should be shared) or try a spa night with manicures, facials, and makeovers. Pull out the board and party games. Games like Taboo, Pictionary, and Trivial Pursuit are classic standbys that always deliver with little gatherings.

Pop up a batch of popcorn for munching and break out the booze. One of the great perks of slumber parties is the fact that no one needs to drive anywhere after a bout of drinking it up. If you’ve got one, go ahead and fire up the ol’ fireplace for that toasty warmth and coziness that makes staying in so nice on cold winter nights. Then tuck down into those sleeping bags and chitchat till you all doze off in the wee hours of the morning. Sleep tight!
