Spa Night In With the Girls

My girlfriends and I love to splurge on the occasional day at the spa, but it can get pricey if done too often. So what is a girl to do?

The next best thing to a day of pampering in the salons? A day (or evening) of pampering at home!

You and your willing friends can luxuriate in the friendly "services" of a home spa in the comfort of home, bond as only girls can do, and cut out the expensive a la carte price tags salons pin on. Tailor the services performed to what you like: facials, makeup application, scrubs, steams, whatever you want to do.

Gather your supplies Invite your friends to bring their own spa elements. It is very possible to have a complete spa experience by rounding up friends and having each one bring a spa item or two.

If you'd like to have your own spa kit on hand and save what your friends need to bring, keep a spa box. Making a spa kit is a fairly straightforward affair. I keep a box stocked with the basic supplies I like to use in my home spa:

  • Storage box
  • Cotton balls
  • Nail polish remover
  • Nail polish
  • Finger/toe separator
  • Nail file/clippers
  • Facial wash
  • Face mask
  • Lotion or moisturizer
  • Washcloth
  • Headband

You can get as simple or elaborate as you like. All of these items can even be found at the drugstore, and many can even be found in the local dollar store.

It's nice to have a good-looking box that fits into your decorating scheme and is readily available for insta-spa whims. I like using a simple photo storage box, easily found at houseware stores like Bed, Bath and Beyond and Ikea. Also nice are small hatboxes or old shoeboxes you can paint or cover in contact paper.

In addition to the basic list of supplies above, I also like to keep a pair of cotton socks and gloves for moisturizing while waiting (and chatting, eating, relaxing), as well as Ponds Soothing Eye Cucumber Slices for freshening up tired and puffy eyes. Freeman's makes some affordably great products like foot scrubs and rubs and facial creams, including the Cucumber and Ginseng Mineral Peel-Off Masque -- which is loads of fun to slather on and then schlep off like the white glue "skin" we made as kids--with the added effect of pulling out those nasty impurities skin tends to collect. Those ever-present pore cleansing strips by Biore and Ponds are also very refreshing.
