Making the first day at school a great one is not an easy thing to do! There are many mixed emotions when our child enters kindergarten. We are proud that our child is getting more independent. We are happy to see our child entering a new phase
in life. We are sad to see our baby grow up and we are really sad
thinking "if my baby is getting older...so am I!" How can we make the first day at school a memorable one? There isn't a full-proof method on easing the first day at school but here a are few tips that help make this experience more positive. During the summer months, include your child on errands for school supplies. Your child doesn't have to be there for every item but should be for important items such as purchasing the school bag and/or lunch bag. Children will learn to help make decisions and take pride in their belongings. At home, sit with your child and label every school supply. YES, every item, every pencil, crayon and eraser. By putting your child's name on the objects, you are developing ownership and identity.
You're also making sure that your child's supplies don't end up in the lost and found. Visit the school beforehand. If the school is not available for inside tours, let your child explore the school yard. Help your child identify with the new surroundings. On the eve, ask your child to help you with the lunch/snack preparations. By doing this chore together, you'll be sharing quality time and your child will most likely eat what was made by both of you. Don't try new lunch/snack items on your child at lunch. Your child will need lots of energy, so don't risk your child not eating during the day. Prepare the clothes, bags and other items to be brought to school. Let your child choose what clothes will be worn. When your child is asleep, put a love note in the lunch bag. Even a child who doesn't read will feel special receiving a note. "I love you" can be written in symbols such as eye=I, heart=love, and U=you or a few words on a piece of paper can also help to open communication line between your child and the new teacher. On that morning, take a picture of your child either in front of the school bus or at the school entrance. I recommend that the parent
