Halloween is just around the corner and you're planning your Halloween party. Should you have children bring in their costumes or will they be making your own? Some families at your centers may not be able to afford costumes and trying to make a costume for each little one in your group can be time consuming. The easiest idea it to make different hats or headbands for each child in your group. They can wear them on their heads and you can apply a little make-up on their cheeks. Making a headband is easy. Use a 2-inch-wide strip of bristle board, taped or stapled together at the ends to form a headband. Here are ten suggestions how to decorate (depending on your age group, let your children draw, cut, color and glue items on to decorate the headband. Animals Deer: Make a headband. Tape two small twigs to the headband - pointing upwards. Use red make up on the child's nose to make Rudolph. Cow: Tape two cow (black and white) ear shapes to the headband. Make black markings on the child's cheeks. Bunny: Tape two white bunny ears to the headband and tape two smaller pink ears inside the white ears. Make whiskers with a black eye pencil. Elephant: Tape two big gray ears to the side on the headband. Make a trunk out of the gray paper and use a string to hold the trunk in the middle-front of the headband (below the child's nose). Bug: Cut out of construction paper, tape two feelers on the front part of the headband and two wings at the back of the headband. Sheep: Have your child glue cotton-balls all the way around the headband. Add two little white ears. Use construction materials to make the animals tail hanging from your child's belt. Community Members Doctor: Cut out a circle (the size of a drinking glass) from sturdy cardboard. Cover the circle with aluminum foil and glue onto the headband. Draw first aid crosses on each cheek. Queen: Make a headband using two strips, to make a 4-inch-wide strip. Glue on glitter and metallic sparkles for a rich and royal look. Athlete: On the headband glue items relating to the sport. For example: the team logo, sports cards or pictures cut from newspaper and magazines. Postal worker: Have the child stick stamps on the headband. Use the stamps from unsolicited mail or invest and buy 25 one-cent stamps from the post office. Make a headband and see what your child comes up with. Set out glue, scraps papers and let them create! The headbands can also be used as a rainy day activity or to make characters from a story you are reading. You don't need to celebrate Halloween, anything worth celebrating is worth making a headband for. Go To Page: 1 2
