Every year, there are new technologies that can be used for e-business, and technology trends that can affect your business. It's hard to keep track of these changes. This article looks at some of the newest technology trends and how they affect your business. Windows ME - This is the latest operating system from Microsoft. Bottom line - keep it out of your business. Why? It has limited networking abilities, it's untested, and the new features are all focused on business users. The most flexible business platforms are still Windows 2000 and Windows 98. Macintosh OS X - The latest version of Apple's operating system is in public beta now and is generating a lot of excitement. It is based on a robust Unix operating system. Apple has layered on an interface that is so pretty that Steve Jobs thinks you will want to lick your screen. Hold off on OS X, even if you are a die-hard Mac user. While OS X will be a giant leap in terms of stability and potential for Apple's operating system, it will be at least a year before OS X can support the same functionality that Mac users already have. Look for major compatibility problems, too. Finally, even though OS X is based on Unix, don't expect it to start shopping up in big companies any time soon. Enterprise companies don't care if a server is "lickable". They need equipment with robust support, and Apple has never made a serious attempt to get put together the support infrastructure that big companies demand. Wireless Internet Technologies - Wireless Internet as it now stands is almost completely useless. Why? It's expensive, and hard to use. Who wants to surf the net with a tiny cell phone screen? Palm screens are almost as bad. I've worked with several wireless devices, and they are painful to try to surf the net with. It can take a minute or two just to type in an URL. Skip these technologies for now. You don't want to use them or supply information for them. The only exception is if you have a website that delivers services or information that is both extremely valuable and very time sensitive.
