The Secret of Email Marketing© James Lewin

Email marketing is becoming more and more popular as a way of finding
and retaining customers. Why?
- Email and electronic newsletters let you keep your customers
up-to-date on your products and services
- Email is very inexpensive.
- Email marketing gets results
- Anyone can do it.
Do you know what the secret of successful email marketing is?
Avoid being Spam
The most important rule of email marketing is to make sure your mail
isn't Spam. Spam, or junk email, is any message that your audience
doesn't want to receive.
For most users, unsolicited or unwanted email is the most disliked
aspect of using email. They use automatic filtering software to get rid
of it, or just delete it without opening it.
If you want your message to be read, make sure that readers don't see
your email as Spam. Make sure your message doesn't even look like Spam.
Do the Opposite of What Spammers Do
People have a natural desire to delete junk email as quickly as
possible. To avoid having your messages deleted, do the opposite of what
spammers do. Here are some examples from actual junk emails:
Spammers Use All-Caps and Excessive Punctuation.
TAP THE $$$ FLOW ON THE INTERNET!!!
Use normal capitalization and punctuation instead.
Spammers Use Hype.
Single mom with 9 kids makes it BIG on the web!!!
Avoid hype like the plague. Be honest, if your message isn't
exciting, don't send it.
Spammers talk about making money.
RATE YOUR FAVORITE BUSINESS AND WIN $5,000!
Even if your product or service involves money, avoid talking about
it directly.
Spammers speak in tongues.
Our mission is to continue to leverage high-payoff technology as
well as to globally integrate long-term high-impact methods of
empowerment while maintaining the highest standards.
Use plain English, written informally.
Respect Your Audience
Your audience's time is your most precious resource. Respect the
privilege of getting into their email box, and reward them for allowing
you in. Otherwise, your message becomes Spam.
Mail them something important. There are two main reasons to send
someone email marketing:
- To cement your relationship with the receiver.
- To get them to act.
Remember that maintaining your relationship with the receiver is more
important than getting them to act. If you constantly ask them to buy
something, or go to your site, or to do anything, you may turn them off.
