New eBook Reader coming soon

Aug 19, 2001 - © Richard Loeffler

In a couple of weeks a new eBook reading device will hit the store shelves. The Hiebook, manufactured in Korea is the latest of the new breed of dedicated devices - like the Franklin eBookMan and Microsoft's Pocket PC - based PDA's that include an e-book reader as one of the many other functions. The Hiebook has a slightly larger screen than the Palm or Pocket PC. It runs on its own operating system (we need another operating system?), weighs 8.8 ounces and has a backlit 320 X 480 LCD touch screen (a colour screen is in the works). It comes with 16 MB of built in memory and a USB port with data sync capabilities. It is also an MP3 player, a digital audio recorder, as well as all the other function you would find in a PDA. It will sell for around $250 (US). A little high if you want an ebook reader but a good price if you are going to use the other functions as well.

If you are thinking of getting one, I suggest you investigate http://eBookHome.com They are offering the Hiebook for $249 with a free upgrade to 32 MB, and $10 gift certificate for ebook purchases from eBookHome. This offer is only good on pre-booked orders. Of course you could wait until they hit the stores and see if anyone drops the price any.

While on the subject of eBookHome, it was announced this week an alliance between eBookHome and Lightning Source Inc to offer a collection of ebook titles from Lightning's digital library, to eBookHome.com's recently opened bookstore. Lightning's list includes titles from Random House, Simon and Schuster, McGraw-Hill and St. Martin's Press.
