Frankfurt E-Book Winners

Well, the winners of The International eBook Award were announced this week. With all the controversy over the nominations, the announcement had little effect upon the up-start e-book industry. But just in case you were wondering who the winners were here they are.

E.M. Schorb's historical novel 'Paradise Square,' from Denlinger's Publishers, and David Maraniss's 'When Pride Still Mattered,' a biography of famed football coach Vince Lombardi, shared the $100,000 first prize. The committee apparently decided that it could not give its highest award to just a single fiction or nonfiction eBook, so it picked one of each.

The IeBAF also handed out four $10,000 prizes for the best original fiction and nonfiction eBooks and the best fiction and nonfiction works converted from print to eBook form. The winner for Best Fiction eBook Converted from Print was White Teeth, The award for Best Nonfiction eBook Converted from Print went to Radical Brand (Überleben in der Sintflut), the book was published by German publisher Econ Verlag. Ed McBain's The Last Dance was chosen the Best Original eBook Work of Fiction. The Frankfurt award for Best Original eBook Work of Nonfiction was given to author Larry Colton for Counting Coup: A True Story of Basketball and Honor on the Little Big Horn.

The IeBAF gave an award for Technical Achievement to Franklin Electronic Publishers for its Franklin eBookMan reading device, scheduled to be available in November.

The e-book independents felt left out of the IeBAF's and I guess they were. So to retaliate, they are going to have their own award next year. I personally think this is a big mistake. It will only go to further ghettoize the e-book industry. Sure, the writers and publishers are upset at the dominance of print publishers in the award's nominations, but what did they expect? Did they really believe they could unseat the establishment in the first year? It's going to be a long hard uphill battle to get recognition, but taking your ball and going home isn't going to give you any credibility! Oh well, just for the record, here's the press release.
