Fourth of July Celebration WreathIt's almost here, that special day when Americans celebrate their independence with parades and fireworks. This day, along with other days before it, will be a first since the tragedy of September 11th. We've had our first Thanksgiving, celebrated Christmas, started a New Year, remembered our veterans and fallen leaders, thanked our mother's and father's and now we will come together, as a country, to honor and give thanks for our freedom on the Fourth of July. For those of you who would like to display a token of respect for this day in your home, we will be making a red-white and blue wreath. This is a simple wreath that can be hung in your house or proudly displayed on your front door. Items needed: 1) 10" to 12" moss base 2) 1 to 2 bags of moss 3) 1 pkg each blue and white salvias 4) 1 pkg each blue and white statice 5) white everlasting or baby's breath 6) red celosia or red yarrow 7) 1 pkg of lavender 8) glue gun (9 door hanger 10) florist's wire 11) miniature flag(s). Snippet: Optional flower suggestions: Purple and blue- delphinium, cornflower, strawflower, White- statice, yarrow, Red- rose hip, globe amaranth. Start off by covering the base, top and sides, with moss. Use glue to attach moss to the base. The extra moss adds fullness to the wreath and will help camouflage the floral wire. Starting on the inside rim of the base, attach your choice of red flower. Using a moss base has an advantage for attaching flowers and which method you choose is what you have found that works best. For the beginners, though, if possible, insert the flower stems into the base itself. Add a drop of hot glue for extra strength. You can also use the wire method and attach each flower individually or attach a bunch of flowers with wire. Once the inner circle is complete, moving out to the top of the base and starting where the red flowers leave off, start attaching the next layer, which will be primarily white flowers. Once you have this layer completed, go back and add several small bunches of lavender, 3 or 4, within the circle of white. This breaks up the solid coloring of the two layers by adding highlights and helping to enhance the colors. Follow the same method as above, inserting, gluing, wiring, gluing until the second layer is complete.
