Easter Bonnets

Hippity, hoppity Easter's on its way.

When I was a little girl, I remember at Easter time that I always got a new frilly, pastel colored dress and a matching hat. Well, with Easter fast approaching, I thought making our own rendition of the infamous Easter bonnet, whether to wear or display, would be great fun and bring back some fond memories.

Supplies needed depend on the size of the bonnet. I'm using a 12"-14" straw hat base as my guide. If you want to make 5 1/2"-6" or the even smaller 2 1/2"-3" hats, just calculate the amount of goods you'll need accordingly.

So let's get started with our list. 1) Straw hat base (large or small), 2) silk ribbon (1/4" & 1/2 "or wider if you prefer) in pastel colors of pink, yellow, blue, lavender, green, white, 3) silk flowers such as small daisies and sunflowers, 4) dried statice (white, pink, yellow, lavender, blue), 5) dried straw flowers (pink, yellow, blue) 6) dried baby's breath (white and/or beige) 7) miniature bunnies (either plastic or fuzzy type), 8) miniature carrots (if you can find them) plastic or cloth, 9) hot glue and clear glue sticks, 10) florist tape (optional).

Snippet: Before purchasing your flowers, check your inventory and those extra pieces I've suggested you always keep after a crafting project. You may find enough of a particular flower type/color you can use and that will cut down on the number of items you will need to buy.

First step is to place the ribbons around the head portion of the hat. I am using multiple colors (pink, yellow, lavender of the 1/2" with a strand of 1/4" blue and white). Secure them tightly, tie a single knot at the back and allow the ribbons to hang down the back like streamers. You can cut the ribbons to various lengths or leave them all the same; it's up to you.

If you want, using a flat object like a wooden Popsicle stick, push the edge of the ribbon back from the base and squirt a small dollop of hot glue onto the rim to help secure the ribbon. Don't worry if it shows because we'll be covering it up with flowers.

Now, on to the flowers!

This is the really fun part. You can be as decorative as you like!

An easy way to start with the decorating is to create small bouquets. Place straw flowers and baby's breath in a bunch and tie with a piece of 1/4" ribbon or you can use a piece of florists tape to bind them.
