Well, it’s the end of the month and I hope you’ve all been creative and managed to find unique and tasty ways to finish off that last bit of turkey!
With November bowing out gracefully and December getting ready to make its holiday entrance, it’s time to start planning some craft projects for the Christmas season. I’d like to start off the month with a centerpiece for your holiday table. I call this one a Christmas-a-Copia as it combines the colors, fragrances and flowers of Christmas with the cornucopia or horn-of-plenty that is usually associated with Thanksgiving. Cornucopias are excellent containers to use as centerpieces or as hanging baskets. Usually they come in beige or light brown color, which is fine, but if you want to spray paint it red, green or gold for the holiday, go right ahead. Suggested supplies for your centerpiece creation include fresh pine needles if available, assorted sizes of pine cones, dried cedar stems (very fragrant), silk poinsettias (white or red), holly berries (fresh or artificial), real cinnamon sticks, dried straw flowers in hunter green and cranberry, cat tails (cranberry and green), gold filigree, piece of floral foam, Christmas fragrance potpourri, red bow (optional), glue gun and assorted Christmas ornaments (red, green, gold, silver). First, cut the floral foam so that you can wedge it into the cornucopia (only about half way; you need to leave room at the top). This will give you a secure base to work with. Starting with the pine bows and/or cedar stems, insert them into the bottom portion of the foam. The stems will be the foundation for everything to lay/sit on. Fan then out as far as you want them to reach past the lip of the container keeping them flat. Sprinkle some of the potpourri inside the cornucopia. Next step depends on what goodies you want to fill your cornucopia with. If you use poinsettias, first insert several cattails on top of the greenery to enhance the colors. Next, insert your poinsettias. Surround the flowers with the straw flowers, gold filigree and berries. Glue the bow on top if wanted. Another suggestion is to follow the above steps, laying the stems down first and then adding the cattails. Sprinkle potpourri. Place pinecones and Christmas ornaments on top of greenery (you will need to secure them with a little hot glue), strategically place the berries and cinnamon sticks amongst the cones, add gold filigree. This is really a fun project to make and its possibilities are unlimited. From pinecones and greenery, Christmas ornaments and greenery to just poinsettias and potpourri, you can make a beautiful centerpiece for your holiday table. Go To Page: 1 2
