Mrs. Pumpkin Head Decoration

© Vickie Ferguson

We're getting close to Halloween, so I thought a fun, crafty project featuring Mrs. Pumpkin Head would be in order. This project is quick and easy and requires very little time and supplies. You can whip these little decorations up in no time and have your house or office cubicle decorated in the spirit of the holiday.

The decoration itself is a miniature broom that is used as Mrs. Pumpkin Head's body. She will be wearing an apron and carrying assorted dried flowers and cinnamon. Atop the "handle" of the broom will be her pumpkin head. Think of her as a stickman figure to get a visual.

Supplies needed:

  1. Miniature brooms (5 ½ to 6) inches tall. Not always easily found but most craft stores carry them seasonally.
  2. Halloween fabric-Suggest going to your local fabric outlet and select several patterns. (The amount of yardage will depend on how many you plan on making). One yard of 36" by 45" material will make a lot of aprons!
  3. Black felt-1 to 2 squares
  4. Orange felt-2 to 3 squares
  5. Green felt- 1 square
  6. Craft glue or hot glue
  7. Bag of beige straw or moss type material
  8. 1 spool ¼" black ribbon (if you prefer, you can use 1/8" or a combination of both sizes)
  9. 1 spool ¼" orange ribbon (same as above)
  10. 1 sheet of heavy (durable) construction paper, orange or black. You will use this for tracing the apron and pumpkin head pattern and also to use as the reinforced backing for Mrs. Pumpkin's head.
  11. Assorted dried flowers in orange, yellow, beige, and black. Suggest straw flowers, baby's breath, statice or any other small dried flowers you prefer.
  12. Small cinnamon sticks.

First, place your construction paper on a flat, hard surface. With a pencil, draw a triangle pattern that will be used for cutting out her skirt. You will want the skirt to cover the bottom portion of the broom with the exception of about a half-inch to and inch at the very bottom. You want these bristles to show.

Next, draw a small pumpkin shape. This will serve as the outline for Mrs. Pumpkin's head so size wise, make it in proportion to her body size.

Prepare small bundles of flowers using a variety of Halloween colors. If you have the straw or moss, use this as a backing for the flowers to lie against. Place a cinnamon stick with the flowers. Tie the bundle with 1 each of the black and orange ribbons. Let the ribbons stream down. If the bundles don't seem sturdy enough, place a drop of glue between the flowers, cinnamon stick and the moss/straw for extra strength. Set these aside. Snippet: Do not make these too heavy, as they will be glued to her skirt.
