Halloween Wreath

Well, here we are at the end of September and I'd like to share with you my upcoming seasonal forecast.

For me September is the pre-fall feeling month. I start to look forward to the holidays, think about all the cooking to be done and the mouth-watering aromas that will be wafting throughout the house, decorations and lights, chilly-cool weather and flannel shirts.

When October arrives, I envision all the colorful fall flowers and the turning of the leaves to all of those brilliant colors. October instills in me a need to go outside and rake!

November invokes visions of food such as platters of sliced ham and turkey, cornbread dressing, fresh cranberry sauce and my brother's homemade sweet potato soufflé. (I just made myself so hungry).

December, well what can I say but that my house is full of fragrant concoctions and include both the edible and non-edible kind. At my house you also must envision a selection of kitty friends sleeping under the tree surrounded by presents.

Since tomorrow begins the month when the ever popular Halloween holiday is celebrated, I thought it might be fun to make a wreath filled with Halloween mementos. This is a great project for the kids and the whole family. They can be as creative as they like and when it's completed, have a unique wreath to hang on the front door.

Supplies needed for this project: · Straw based wreath 12" to 14" (larger if you choose) · Assortment of raffia (beige, orange, black) · Assortment of Fall leaves (silk or real if you have them) · Miniature pine cones · Acorns (real if you have them) · Four or five miniature plastic jack-o-lanterns 2" to 3" with a face (assorted colors) · Real miniature pumpkins (optional) · One plastic jack-o-lantern 4" to 5" with face and hanger (optional) · Assortment of Straw flowers (beige, orange, black) · Assortment of miniature plastic or stuffed Halloween characters · Filler for the pumpkins (orange moss or beige and orange raffia) · Assorted candy (individually wrapped) (optional) · Assorted chewing gum (optional) · Wreath door hanger · Glue gun (for adults) · Regular kid's craft glue

First, take the wreath and wrap it with the three colors of raffia. Next, cut shorter strips of the raffia and tie them at differing areas around the wreath. You are trying to achieve a wild look with the raffia going in all directions.

Place and glue several leaves at 4 or 5 locations around the wreath. Place the leaves in a circular type design so that the leaves stick out in three directions. You will be placing and gluing a miniature jack-o-lantern (face pointing out) in the center of the leaves so you want the leaves to frame and fan out around the jack-o-lantern. Once you have the lanterns in place, cut smaller strips of raffia, all colors and glue behind the jack-o-lantern along with an assortment of straw flowers. Add miniature pinecones and/or acorns. In essence, you are creating a miniature pumpkin patch for each jack-o-lantern.
