Floor Vase Arrangement

Do you have a space in your house that is too small for a piece of furniture but you know it "just needs something". Perhaps something tall and airy filled with color would do.

Well, I have a suggestion that just might do the trick. It will take up the unused empty space and add lots of color and compliment the room.

Most of the time I work with smaller arrangements, but for this creation I'm expanding my horizons! For this design, I needed a large vase and the one I selected is a standard Greek style design, 27" high and 46" at its widest area and the mouth is approximately 4" wide.

Here is a list of the supplies needed for this project.

  • Vase (you decide size and style)
  • Piece of foam cut to fit the inside lip and neck of the vase
  • Moss (you select color)
  • Artificial vine (optional)
  • Silk Flowers (need varieties with long stems)
  • Assorted dried flowers
  • Hot glue gun (optional)

First Step: Cut the piece of foam so that it will fit tightly inside the lip and neck of the vase. Be sure the foam is thick enough. If you can cut it from a block of foam, you can cut it thick and form it to fit the lip and neck. You need the foam to be thick so it can support the long stems. Using hot glue, you can secure the foam to the vase by putting a generous amount of glue on the foam then pressing it to the vase. Make sure to do this only after you have the foam cut and sized exactly to the vase. Be careful not to burn your fingers.

Second Step: This step is up to you as to how you want to work with the flowers depending on if you are working with a vase (with hollow neck) or a basket (no neck for the foam to slip down into).

If working with a vase, start creating a basic design with the flowers and the foam block and then insert the worked piece inside the vase. I find that, in this case, it was easier to work with the foam block outside of the vase, and then when I was comfortable with the design, I inserted the completed block into the vase and added hot glue to secure it to the rim.

If working with a large basket, creating the design within the basket with the foam blocks in place is the better way to go. With the basket, you do not have to worry about the foam block "slipping" down inside the neck of the vase while you're inserting the stems.
