Easter Basket Centerpiece

Eastertime! What a beautiful time of the year, spring flowers blooming, butterflies flitting, bee's buzzing. Why not celebrate the holiday by creating a beautiful basket, full of these beautiful buds.

What you will need:

  1. Any type of medium sized wicker basket, it can be round, square or rectangle. The one I'm using is a rectangle wicker basket, brushed with white paint.

  2. Assorted colors of tissue paper, pink, yellow, lavender, pale green, blue. Just think of the colors of easter eggs!

  3. Piece of foam to fit inside the basket.

  4. Colored moss. Again, choose to compliment your basket but keep in mind, it's a Easter basket. I'm using pink.

  5. Assorted flowers. Select flowers of your choice, but think of rainbows and don't be afraid to mix different types and colors. Examples to use, strawflowers come in just about any color imaginable. They are a good base and filler flower and add much color. Other suggestions, carnations, caspia, heather, lavender, nigella, safflower (one of my favorites), pepperberries (very colorful) pussy willow (adds height), and blue salvia, just to name a few.

  6. For your main focal flowers, I suggest roses (dried or silk), hydrangeas, silk sunflowers or daffodils. Experiment with all the varieties to exact the most colorful combination.

Steps to do:

  1. Depending on the size of the basket you're creating, you will probably need to cut the tissue into halves or quarters.

  2. Place the first layer, fit it to the inside of the basket and fan it up and out over the rim. Place the next layer using a different color in the basket, fit it and fan it. Place the third color and so on. Repeat the steps until the basket is completely rimmed in tissue paper. Makes me think of sherbet ice cream.

  3. You can adjust how high or low you want the paper to stand. The purpose of the tissue paper is to frame the flowers inside the basket. Don't be afraid to adjust it.

  4. Next, place the foam brick inside the basket and cover with moss. Again, depending on the size of your basket, you may need to add additional bricks or cut to the size needed for a smaller basket.

  5. Start arranging your flowers. I suggest using the strawflowers as the base filler flower. Place them strategically and at varying heights all over the foam.

  6. Place your focal flowers. Once this is done and the basket looks balanced and not lopsided, begin filling in with additional flower selections. Also, check for height and make sure each "side" of your basket is filled and balanced. Since we're creating this basket as a centerpiece, it's important that the basket looks the same from all sides.
