HO HO HO, I'm starting early with some simple, easy and fun projects for Christmas. As my October articles were dedicated to the celebration of autumn, my November and December articles will be dedicated to the celebration of the Christmas holiday. I wish it could be Christmas all year long because there are so many unique and beautiful crafts to be made. The abundance of vibrant colors and fragrant smells enhance the seasonal decorations of your home during the holidays. With this in mind, I have selected several of my favorite craft projects to share and I hope you will enjoy. The first of these projects will be the creation of a Christmas sleigh basket. The sleigh makes a beautiful centerpiece for your table, fireplace mantle, placed under the tree, or anyplace you would like to add festive holiday color and fragrance. Supplies you will need for this project are:
- one sleigh basket 16" to 18" long in red or green
- one or two foam bricks
- one bag of moss (red or green)
- artificial poinsettias (both large and small) in red, white, maroon or pink, you select the color
- green straw flowers
- red cinnamon scented straw flowers
- artificial holly berries
- gold filigree flowers
- galaxy gyp sprayed gold
- cedar sprigs tinged with gold (optional)
- cinnamon sticks
- satin ribbon (red, green, gold or silver) you choose
- medium size jingle bells
- Christmas scented potpourri
- glue gun and glue
Steps to follow: place the foam brick inside the sleigh. Depending on the length of the sleigh you may need 1 ½ to 2 bricks. Place scented potpourri in the basket around the foam. Cover the foam with moss. Next, starting at the back of the sleigh, place the poinsettias. As you work towards the front of the sleigh, gradually decrease the height of the flowers so that the tallest are in the back and shortest in the front. Bend the stems and arrange the flowers so that they drape over the side of the sleigh. Once you have the flowers arranged to your liking, fill in around the poinsettias with green straw flowers and red cinnamon scented straw flowers. Place gold filigree and cinnamon sticks at the back of the sleigh. Place the holly berries, add additional potpourri throughout for color and fragrance. Check the overall sleigh for balance and color continuity. Place additional filigree where needed and also use the galaxy gyp to fill in and add more color. If you use cedar sprigs, strategically place the sprigs throughout the basket. The cedar adds more greenery and a wonderful fragrance. Finish the project by making small bows using the satin ribbon. Hot glue or tacky glue the ribbons onto the sleigh at the back and/or sides of the sleigh. Add jingle bells, either hot glue in place or loop a piece of ribbon through the top of the bell, tie, and make a bow, then glue in place. That's it, project complete.
