Since my last article was about potpourri and how to make your own blend, I thought this article should show how we can put it to use in two craft projects. We'll be making sachets, one for the bath and one for use anywhere you would like to add some fragrance. Both are simple and the end results are lovely and aromatic items for your home and/or to give as gifts. Remember, the holidays are approaching fast and these crafts will make wonderful stocking stuffers or as a small gift to your co-workers.
Let's get started. Items needed for 1 bath sachet: ¾ cup of your favorite potpourri (either purchased or if you made your own) finely chopped, 1 piece of cotton fabric approximately 4 x 10 inches, needle and thread, tapestry needle, 12 inches of cotton string, 10 inches of wide ribbon (you choose color). First, with the wrong side of the fabric facing up, create a 3/8 inch fold on each short edge. You might want to press the edges with an iron. Next, create a casing by stitching each fold with a ¼ inch seam allowance. Once this is done, with the right sides together, fold the fabric piece in half, crosswise (casing to casing). Again, you might want to press. Now sew the two unstitched edges closed with a ¼-inch seam allowance. When complete, turn the bag right side out. You now have a pocket. To make the drawstring, thread the tapestry needle with the string. Insert the needle into the casing through the seam on one side. Be sure to leave some thread hanging from the casing. Run the string through the casing and exit at the opposite seam then enter the seam casing on the opposite side, run the string through the casing and exit at the seam. Remove the needle and again leave extra string hanging. Fill the bag with potpourri. A good idea is to place a cotton ball on top of the potpourri to help keep the mixture from spilling out. Using the two strings you left hanging, pull tightly (these are your drawstrings) and tie string in a double knot. To make the bow, fold the ribbon in thirds and place it across the drawstring knot and tie it securely using the ends of the string. You may also tie the loose ends of the string together to create a loop. Use the loop to hang the bag under the hot-water tap and run your bath water. Before bathing, remove the bag and squeeze out the excess water. Hang on a towel rack to dry. Sachet is good for four to five baths. Go To Page: 1 2
