Dried Flower Craft Tips for the Beginner

© Vickie Ferguson

Hi, my name is Vickie and welcome to dried flower crafting. Every other week, I will be sharing tips, guidelines, how-to, how not to and passing along any information I have to help get you started creating dried flower baskets and wreaths. Whether you're just beginning, at intermediate level or expert, I hope to share with you some simple techniques and ideas. I thought this first article should be devoted to the novice/beginner/never before made a craft person(s). I'll go over some basic information including supplies and cost so that as we progress, we don't leave anyone behind. So, let's get started.

How many times have you gone shopping and said, "I'd like to make that, I just don't know how" or "I don't have any talent when it comes to making crafts." I am a firm believer that if you feel the desire to do something, you should give it a try! If you have the time to take a class, that's great, but realistically, time is at a premium. You'll find that dried flower crafting is very relaxing and besides being a wonderful way to make beautiful items for yourself and others, it is also a great stress reliever! After a long, hard, tiring, active, busy day, relax and whenever you have some spare moments or even while watching television, work on your project. Tip #1: never, under any circumstances, make your creative project into a work project. Enjoy!!

Ok, you want to make a craft project, so let's get down to business. The very first thing you need to do is decide what type of basket or wreath you want to make. Do you want a straw, grapevine, or willow wreath? What size and style. If making a flower arrangement, what type of container will you use; basket, clay, glass, wicker. Once you decide on type of project the next step is selecting the flowers, color and type. The last step is to decide on style or theme. Example, a spring bouquet, light and airy, or a country theme using sunflowers. You might be saying at this point, "Hey, Vickie, this is all great but I still don't know how to put it all together". If you have an idea of what you want, try to sketch it. You don't have to be a Rembrandt, just get your basic idea down. If you're just not sure, take a look through magazines, especially the gardening or craft section for ideas. You can also go to the local library and checkout craft books. These books are great. They are full of wonderful pictures and step- by-step instructions on how to make the project. I made my first straw and eucalyptus wreath by following the how to instructions from one of these books. Having a visual aide to look at will help guide you.
