Valentine's Day is Coming!

Yes, it's almost that time again. The big "V" day is fast approaching.

This simple project is for those who want to give a special floral gift to a special person but would like something that can be used all year long.

Roses are the traditional flower given on Valentine's day but I was thinking we might want to do a different arrangement using another type of red flower.

Since spring is also just around the corner, I envisioned a lovely vase arrangement of red tulips and cream-colored baby's breath. Not only will the tulips celebrate Valentine's day, they can be enjoyed throughout the spring and summer.

Supplies needed are minimal:

1) White or cream colored vase (wide-rim)

2) 1 block of craft foam

3) 1 bag of craft moss (grey or beige)

4) 1 dozen silk tulips

5) 1-2 bundles of baby's breath

6) 1 bundle of pale yellow straw flowers (optional)

7) craft scissors

8) glue gun/clear glue sticks

Insert the foam into the vase. You might need to shave off portions so it will fit inside the vase.

Depending on the width of the vase mouth, you can put several dollops of hot glue on the bottom of the vase to help hold the foam in place. You need for the foam brick to come close to the top of the vase rim but not all the way.

Next begin inserting the tulip stems into the foam creating your basic design. You can add hot glue to secure the stems.

Add the moss. Be sure it's not too thick and also be sure to fill in around the tulip stems. Secure with hot glue if necessary.

Start adding the baby's breath. Fill in all around the outside of the tulips and inside. Vary the height of the flowers so that the baby's breath serves as a frame for the tulips.

Last, and this is optional, depending on the silk tulip, the inside could have pale white or yellow. If so, you disperse a few yellow straw flowers throughout the arrangement to highlight the tulips.

Step back and take a look. Be sure everything is even and not lop-sided or if you have an area that is too sparse, you can fill in accordingly.

And that's it. Secure any bits with hot glue. Pull some of the outer tulips down a little so there is a draped and more natural look.

This is a lovely arrangement that can be enjoyed for Valentine's day and spring and summer as well.

To store it, place the arrangement in a see through plastic bag and secure with a tie. This will keep the dust from accumulating on the silk flowers.
