Fall Pockets with Potpourri Project

  • Use the markers or crayons to draw faces on your pumpkins and turkeys or use additional bits of construction paper--your choice.
  • Hot glue your decoration onto the place. Let dry. Once it's completely dry, fill in around your decoration with bits of moss, leaves and multiple colors of the straw flowers, babies breath and galaxy gyp. Again, for example, picture the pumpkin sitting among some moss, pine needles and acorns. Or, picture the cornucopia sitting atop the moss surrounded by cutouts of fruit and veggies. You can also make the pocket without decorations and use just leaves and flowers.
  • At the top corner of each pocket, you will need to make a hole large enough to slip the ribbon through. Be sure not to get too close to the edge of the plate! Once the holes are made, measure out approximately 18 inches of ribbon (you can make it shorter or longer, your choice). Insert the ribbon in one end and tie a knot. Do the same with the other end. Now you have a hanging pocket! The nice thing about these pockets is they are created using lightweight materials.
  • Last step is to fill the pocket with colored moss, allowing it to "hang" over a little for effect, or place a small layer of moss in the pocket and then fill near to the top with seasonal potpourri. These are great little items to hang throughout the house, bringing the aromas of autumn into your home.
  • And that's all there is to it. A really fun project that the whole family can participate in.

I'd like to thank my neighbor, Abby, who just turned 7, for inspiring me with this idea by giving me my own "pocket" decorated with autumn leaves and filled with a packet of birdseed (she knows how much I like to feed the wild birds in my yard).

I hope you enjoy this article and till next time, Happy Thanksgiving!
