Fall Pockets with Potpourri Project

© Vickie Ferguson

Ok, it's only three weeks till Thanksgiving, and do I have a really quick and easy project for the kids to make as decorations for friends and family!

This is one of those really simple projects that takes very little time and effort and is inexpensive, too.

What we'll be creating are hanging "pockets" decorated with silk fall-colored leaves, dried flowers, pumpkins, turkeys or any other Thanksgiving decoration you'd like to add.

Supplies needed:

  • Styrofoam plates (1 package of plain, not segmented, plates)
  • Silk leaves in fall colors (enough to cover the front of the number of plates you create)
  • Straw flowers (1 bundle each of beige, orange, black, yellow) Use snippets of leftover flowers from other projects if you have enough.
  • Babies breath or Galaxy Gyp (beige)
  • Moss (orange, yellow or deep green if available) 1-2 bags depending on how many pockets being made
  • Brown or orange ribbon (1-2 rolls 1/8")
  • Miniature straw brooms (optional)
  • Pine needles (optional)
  • Acorns (optional)
  • Construction paper (Black, white, brown, orange, green, yellow, red)
  • Glue gun and clear glue
  • Craft tape (colors) optional
  • stapler
  • scissors (for kids)
  • Potpourri (optional)
  • Magic Markers or Crayons (optional)
  • Let's get started.

  • To begin, take a Styrofoam plate and cut it in half so you have two half moons.
  • Next, glue the two sides together by placing a thin ribbon of hot glue along the rim of the plate, then pressing the other half of the plate on top. Hold in place for a few seconds and allow to dry. You should have a "pocket".
  • For added security, place several staples along the rim of the plate to be sure it holds together. Don't worry about the staples showing--they'll be covered with leaves.
  • Optional: Take the colored craft tape and, starting at the top of the plate, line the outside rim, all the way round to the other side, with the tape. This is even more security, plus it adds additional color and compliments the leaves.
  • Take a selection of leaves, being sure to mix up the colors, and hot glue them all around the top, sides and bottom of the plate. If you plan on adding a Thanksgiving decoration, do not add any leaves to the middle section. Be sure to overlap the leaves for a full effect.
  • Take the construction paper and, using a stencil, pattern, or hand-drawn outline, cut out your Thanksgiving decorations. Be sure the cutout is in proportion to the size of the plate. For example, use the orange to make a pumpkin, beige paper to make a cornucopia, black and brown paper for a turkey, black and white to make Pilgrims, green, red, yellow, and orange for fruit and vegetables to fill the cornucopia, or use your imagination to make whatever holiday decoration you can think of that fits the occasion!
