Welcoming Fall

© Vickie Ferguson

Ok, you know what time it's getting to be. We're getting ready to move into my favorite season (besides spring) of the year. Fall is sneaking up on us and I'm so excited!

I like to greet a new season with a wreath for the front door. It serves as a signal that "times they are a-changin".

I've been collecting various types of vine from my yard, allowing them to dry, and then twisting them into vine wreath bases. And so I thought using one of the homegrown wreaths would be a great start for this project.

October and November are for the more traditional colors of brown, rust, yellow and orange whereas September is a month all its own and we have a larger palette to choose from.

While September heralds the beginning of fall, there are still a few summer flowers that have hung on till late August. Using these flowers as an inspiration, I thought by combining these late summer bloomers along with some pre-season fall colors we could create a beautiful wreath that will say, "so long to summer and hello to fall".

Supplies needed:

  • grapevine wreath (fall)
  • gray moss
  • silk calla lilies - white
  • silk tiger lilies - orange/yellow
  • purple iris
  • deep blue tarwae or avena (optional)
  • straw flowers - hunter green
  • poa flowers- natural (optional)
  • hot glue gun and clear glue
  • craft scissors and wire snippers
  • First, spread a layer of hot glue over the top and inner rim of the wreath and then place the moss, pressing lightly. Be careful not to burn your fingers.

With the wreath lying on a flat surface, take the calla and tiger lilies and arrange them on the wreath to give you a visual idea of the overall effect.

Use the calla lilies as the main focal point and place them so they are not uniform. Meaning, you want the wreath to look natural so allow the lilies to look and move in a natural manner vs. trying to make them conform.

Mix the tiger lilies in among the calla lilies and then use the purple/blue iris to highlight the white, orange and yellow of the lilies. The poa flowers, which are a long stemmed flower, can be placed with the iris as a backdrop and compliment to the deep blue flower.

Use the silk leaves that come with the flowers as filler and to balance out the wreath design. You can use the straw flowers as additional filler and to add more green. Be sure to include leaves and straw flowers on the inside rim.
