In celebration of the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, I thought it would be very festive to create a spectacular basket centerpiece that can be displayed inside on the dining room table or outside on the family picnic table.
This is another quick and easy project that requires minimal supplies and the results will be outstanding. Let's start with the flower selections. To create an oversized basket display we will need to be very selective in the types of flowers we use. Let's begin with the largest flower that will make up the base of the arrangement. I'm suggesting we use dried white chrysanthemums for this portion. For the red portion, how about dried red carnations. They are a medium size flower and will compliment the size of the chrysanthemums. Now to add height to the arrangement and to finish off our patriotic petal selection, we'll be using deep blue salvia, dried. Another suggested flower combination would be dark blue hydrangeas, white chrysanthemums, and red carnations or red salvia. There are many flowers to choose from, so don't be afraid to experiment! Next you'll need a white wicker basket. I'm choosing wicker for two reasons. First, it is a summer-type container and two, because you can be creative by painting a thin strip of red and blue paint on the edge of each basket reed, alternating from one color to the other, to accentuate the basket so it to represents the red, white and blue of Independence Day. It will also work as a compliment to the flower arrangement itself. You'll also need two or three blocks of florist foam. If you're doing a large basket at least 12-inches wide, you will need two blocks and most likely, a third to completely cover the basket base. One or two bags of moss will be needed to cover the foam blocks. Moss comes in a variety of colors or you can go with basic gray. This will be your choice. Be sure to have your glue gun handy along with several clear glue sticks to add extra security when inserting the flower stems into the foam. Now you're ready to begin. Create your base by inserting the white chrysanthemums in a circle around the perimeter of the basket. Next, place additional flowers in the center. Be sure to have them at varying heights with some sticking out sideways from the basket at an angle. We don't want all the flowers standing straight up; we want this to be a rounded basket full of flowers. Go To Page: 1 2
