New Year's Eve Basket

Well, we're down to the next to last day of 2003 and I was trying to think of something simple yet festive as a New Year decoration.

Something that would take a short time to create, use minimal supplies and will be a great addition to my New Year's holiday table. If you've been creating your inventory of supplies, you should have most of the items you'll need.

Since time is short, this project can be whipped together in less than an hour so let's get started!

Our project is to create a dried flower basket utilizing a variety of flowers and New Year's Eve party favors.

First, we need a flower base. I'm using a round, shiny gold colored container. A brass container would also compliment your flowers.

Cut and place a foam cube in the container of your choice and fill with a colorful medley of moss such as red and beige.

Select a color theme and pick flowers accordingly. The flowers I'm using are beige statice, beige straw flowers, beige babies breathe, beige galaxy gyp, ivory wheat shafts, red dyed wheat shafts, gold filigree wisps and either red poinsettias or white poinsettias (silk) tinged with gold. With the gold container filled with beige and gold flowers, the red will work as a focal point drawing the whole arrangement together.

Start inserting the tallest flowers into the foam to create the "outline" of the arrangement. I want mine tall and full, so I set the wheat shafts around the perimeter (tallest in the back and gradually shorten around the sides).

Next, insert the focal flowers (either the red or white poinsettias) in the middle. Do the same as with the wheat shafts. Place one grouping taller than the other so that you continue creating the "height" of the basket.

Since the babies breath and galaxy gyp are such fragile flowers, we'll save these for last. Next, start placing the straw flowers throughout the basket. I usually make a clump of these and then insert into the foam and then add hot glue to secure them. They, too, are fragile but we need to start filling in the base.

Take your party favors, such as those funny tooting horns, and insert these in the foam if possible. You will most likely need to hot glue these but be sure to utilize the wheat shafts, if possible, as a base to secure the horns to. Place these throughout the basket and if they have trailing ribbons, so much the better. The whole idea behind this basket is to create a colorful holiday basket that visually celebrates the impending New Year, so any type of party favor you can easily add to your creation will enhance the holiday flavor.
