Next month on October 13, 2003 we have a national holiday, Columbus Day, to celebrate and I thought a quick, fun and easy project that can include the kids, would be in order.
Columbus Day honors the founding of America and to commemorate the day, I envisioned a wreath utilizing the colors that must have been present that day. We'll be using blue (sea), green (land), beige (sand) and yellow (sunshine) to pay tribute to this day. The children can add to the wreath their own creative rendition of the ships that landed on that memorable day by designing their own ships out of construction paper. Not only will they be able to express their artistic talent, they will also receive a mini-history lesson, too.
While the kids are drawing their ship designs (between 3 and 4 inches long) using the construction paper and markers, you can begin working on the wreath itself. Working with the lower half of the straw base only, first, lay a thin layer of dark blue moss all around the outside rim and about half-way over the top of the base. Next, place a thin layer of beige moss (sand) next to the blue moss (sea) then finish with a layer of dark green moss next to the beige finishing off the top of the base and inside the inner rim. Be sure to place hot glue on the wreath to secure the moss. Next, starting on the outside of the base, place light blue straw flowers interspersed with the blue moss for contrast (sea). Follow with a layer of beige avena mixed in with the beige moss (sand )then add/blend in the dark green straw flowers (land). You should end up at the inner rim of the wreath where you will place more greenery and twigs to depict trees. You can also place tiny flowers for additional color. Once the "ships" are drawn and decorated, hot glue the toothpick to the bottom, back of the ship leaving enough of the pick exposed to insert into the base. Strategically insert the ships into the straw base of the outer rim adding a drop of glue to help secure the pick. If using flora picks, glue to the back of the ship and insert. Be very careful with the hot glue.
