Tableau Centerpiece

This month I'd like to talk about and explain how to do a "tableau" centerpiece.

Now you all are probably wondering what in the world is she talking about now! How can you have a tableau and centerpiece in the same group?

Let me explain.

A while back I had a request for a wreath that was going to be a birthday present for a little girl's bedroom. Upon further discussion, I determined it wasn't an actual "hanging on the wall" wreath the customer wanted but a wreath that depicted her daughter's love of bears and she didn't want it hanging at all!

Well, I had to put on my thinking cap and came up with what I call "tableau" settings. These are by far some of the most fun projects I've done.

Here's what I did. First I needed a base and I used a 12-inch grapevine "arc" shaped wreath or half-moon shaped base.

I took a piece of foam block and cut it in half lengthwise and secured one piece to one end of the arc and the other piece of foam to the other end of the arc with florist spikes so that the "arc" was now a standing form. The foam was the platform.

Knowing that the theme was to be bears, I purchased a bag of miniature bears from the craft store along with gray and green moss, green straw flowers, dark brown eucalyptus, and a variety of colorful tiny flowers. You can use any snippets of flowers you have been saving too.

I started by covering the foam base with moss so it looked like a natural grass setting. Use hot glue to secure the moss and be sure and cover the foam completely.

Next, carry the moss theme up and over the grapevine base. You may also need to hot glue small pieces of foam to the base so you will have someplace to insert the flower stems. Cover the foam with a thin layer of moss. If it's too thick, you won't be able to push the stems through.

Decide on how you want the "scene" to look. With the project I did, I created the tableau as a forest scene with the bears in various parts of the forest. I had two or three bears grouped together in one part of the tableau and then placed the others at various points along the base and also sitting at the base on the foam platform among a bed of flowers.
