Well, we're getting close to the end of April and you know what "special day" is right around the corner in May that we always celebrate.

Special day? May? Celebration? Was that a scream of panic or was that rapid running to your desk to check out the calendar that I hear?

If you're like me, you wait till almost the last minute of the last hour the day before Mother's Day to take care of things. You'd think after all these years of being a daughter I'd have it planned down to a science. So, I decided to break the mold and get a head start on my Mom's day project.

As we all know, the standard, traditional and tried and true gifts for Mom are a special card, box of candy and beautiful flowers.

Well, I can't help you with the card or candy but I sure can make some suggestions about silk and dried flower arrangements.

Making a dried flower craft does not mean you cannot give your Mom the real deal. There is nothing quite like a dozen long stemmed roses or a bunch of deep purple iris or yellow daffodils and of course the bouquets featuring a variety of spring beauties. If you plan to buy these, be sure to make note in my articles on drying flowers so you can preserve and then use them to make another craft project. I did this with my birthday bouquet. I dried the flowers and have them to use in an arrangement that will always be a remembrance of my special day.

Anyway, back to Mom.

Now we have several choices of flower crafts we can make. There's the ever popular flower arrangement, a lovely wreath or a bouquet of flowers!

This year I'd like to do a silk and dried flower bouquet for my Mom. I've made dried arrangements for her in the past but I've never put together a "special" bouquet.

Supplies needed:

ยท Silk flowers - these can be long stemmed or shorter stemmed depending on the size of the bouquet overall. Suggestions include roses (one color or a combination of two colors such as red and white, cream and lavender, pink and white, yellow and cream). Roses are also available in a velvet texture vs. silk and extremely natural looking. I've also found silk roses with dewdrops dispersed across the buds and they look like I just picked them from the garden. Additional suggestions are multi-colored day lilies, iris, carnations, zinnias, camellias, dahlias, etc. Length of these flowers will depend a lot on the size of the other flowers you use. You don't want them all the same size but close. Check out this link to the Silk Greenhouse. This is the page for silk stems: http://www.silkgreenhouse.com
