The 1999 remake of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original story put the Jurassic Park series to shame. Supposedly, that series loosely modeled its script around the book. There is just no resemblance. On its own, it was wonderful, but as a Doyle story, it is horrible.
The style of filming is almost something you would see in a made-for-tv movie. The plot is perfectly setup for a continuing television series, though none have ever appeared that were based on this specific version.
The film obviously worked with a low budget. Despite the evident lack of funds, the dinosaurs were not bad quality. The worked with what they had and came up with a nice medium between the 1925 and Jurassic Park versions. They more advanced than the older style, but not near as realistic as the modern competitors.
As for the dramatics, it fulfilled a purpose. It kept my attention, but perhaps that was for comparison, more than anything. All throughout the film, I was thinking of the Jurassic Park sequel, Lost World. It has similarities, but a majority of differences. It is a different story all together. This version, like so many of the other remakes, closely follows the original book. There is the challenger, and his companions that go out in search of the truth to a scientists claim.
The story did not focus on any particular character. It was simply a tale of a lost world in the outer reaches of the Amazon. It was a journey of four people from different industries. It warmed your heart, and was suspenseful at the same time. It is not heart stopping in the least, but it is not slow-paced either. It was not bad for a family film, were it not for the scantily clad women.
Overall, it was a decent tribute to the works of the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It follows the story with an air of respect for the famed author. As compared to some of the other remakes of this story, this is one of the best.
