The story surrounding the experience on the island covers the majority of the story, as it takes place over a four years. In all that time, you never get the point to the movie. It is not until he escapes from the island and returns to civilization that his character puts it all into perspective. The character never knows anything that you do not. When he returns, his life is gone. As he pours his heart out to one of his long-time friends, you finally get the message behind the story. In his experiences on the island, he learns that an important lesson about life. He tells his friend, "Tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide will bring?"
An illustration of this realization comes to life when Noland returns the one package that he kept. It ends up belonging to the same woman from the beginning scene. Life brings a new life in with the tide.
This is a rather simple story, but a dramatic one. Tom Hanks gives a memorable performance as he takes you through this emotional roller coaster. If given a chance, everyone can learn something from this film.
