IHRA's big announcement this week is that one of the most famous women drag racers of all time is returning to the sport beginning with the Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals at Darlington. Dubbed "Cha Cha" Muldowney in the early part of her career as a marketing ploy, Shirley is one of the true pioneers of women's auto sports. In a time when women were discouraged, Shirley had to get the signatures of Top Fuel racers endorsing her to compete. A male dominated sport at the time, two other pioneers of the sport-Connie Kaletta and Don "Big Daddy" Garlits endorsed her. Her story was memorialized in a movie and she holds four IHRA and three NHRA championships.
WELCOME BACK SHIRLEY AND THE BEST FROM STUDEBAKER. After NHRA's heralding of the great TV contract they received, ESPN disregarded the contract and Preempted the Feb 5 qualifying at Pomona. Tom Compton, obviously a diplomat, addressed this in a letter to fans. You may see the letter at: http://www.nhra.com/wklynews/2000news/fe... Television has its methods ESPN2 was out and out wrong on this one. A contract is a contract and they have lost respect in this writers eyes. IHRA had one strange notice posted 2/8/00. "IHRA has suspended a number of drivers 'indefinitely' for suspected rule violations. IHRA will not tolerate this sort of action in any way, shape or form." That was all that was said.
